Tony Cokes, Evil.80.Empathy?, 2020
Streaming online July 13 – 26, 2020
Co-presented by Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, and ARGOS centre for audiovisual arts
Greene Naftali is pleased to share a new work by Tony Cokes, entitled Evil.80.Empathy?. Facilitating the digital premiere is Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, London; Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and ARGOS centre for audiovisual arts, Brussels. These partnering institutions will host the video on their websites until Sunday, July 26.
Despite its modest 2:43 minute duration, Evil.80.Empathy? is a gut punch, a call to action, and a reckoning with complicity. The video heralds the latest development in the artist's "Evil" series (2003–), animating words recently spoken by Tina Campt and Saidiya Hartman and crackling with a soundtrack by the UK producer and DJ, Caspa.
Goldsmiths and the Carpenter Center presented volumes one and two of Cokes’s solo exhibition, If UR Reading This It's 2 Late: Vol. 1–3, between September 2019 and March 2020. ARGOS will open volume three in September 2020.
